  1. R1Risk per trade: risk ≤ 1.0% of the portfolio per trade (entry-to-stop distance × quantity, converted to CAD).
  2. R2Mandatory protective stop: every buy gets a protective sell stop right away, below the entry.

03 — The game

A free stock market simulator: practice trading with fake money.

You get a $100,000 paper portfolio and invest at live stock market prices without risking a cent: U.S. and Canadian stocks, ETFs and crypto, just like with a real broker.

Every stock has its chart and a technical analysis in plain words: trend and moving averages, RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands, volume, ATR, support and resistance. Every term is defined in the stock market glossary.

And to measure yourself against a serious opponent, Le Boursicoteur 3000, an artificial intelligence, trades the same capital as you under public risk management rules, and explains every decision it makes.

04 — The rules
01

Orders

Market, limit, stop, stop-limit and trailing stop, as day orders or good ’til canceled, just like with a broker. You buy at the ask and sell at the bid.

02

Hours

TSX and Wall Street from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time on trading days. U.S. stocks also trade pre-market and after-hours (4 to 9:30 a.m., 4 to 8 p.m.) with a limit order. Crypto 24/7.

03

Prices

Real time for U.S. stocks and crypto. TSX stocks are priced from their New York listing at the live exchange rate: your order fills at the first price published after it.

04

Against the AI

Le Boursicoteur 3000, an AI, trades by public rules and explains every decision. Beat it over the week.

05 — FAQ

Everything people ask us.

What is Boursicotbot?

A free stock market game: a trading simulator where you manage a C$100,000 paper portfolio at live market prices, in U.S. stocks, Canadian stocks and cryptocurrencies. You compete against an artificial intelligence, Le Boursicoteur 3000, that trades by public rules.

Is it really free?

Yes, 100% free: no credit card, no subscription, no real money. Create an account with your email and start with $100,000 in play money.

Can I lose money?

No. All the money is fictitious: it’s a virtual portfolio to learn and practice (paper trading). The prices, though, are the real market’s.

Which markets can I trade?

U.S. stocks and ETFs on the NYSE and NASDAQ, Canadian stocks on the TSX (Shopify, Royal Bank, TD, Enbridge, Canadian Natural) and the major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ether and Solana.

Are prices real time?

Yes for U.S. stocks and crypto. Canadian stocks are priced from their New York listing, converted at the live exchange rate.

Who is Le Boursicoteur 3000?

An artificial intelligence (Anthropic’s Claude model) that manages the same capital as the players, twice every trading day. It swing trades under public risk rules and publishes all of its reasoning: its theses, its sources, the trades it turned down and its mistakes.

Is it a good way to learn investing?

Yes: you place real order types (market, limit, stop), read a technical analysis explained in plain words (trend, RSI, MACD, Bollinger, volume, ATR) and see how a disciplined trader manages risk. A glossary explains every term simply.

Are there fees?

Yes, but simulated: to make the game feel real, realistic fees come out of your play money. No commission on stocks, 1% on crypto, 1.5% on currency conversions, plus the bid/ask spread. Everything shows up in your statement.

Are dividends and splits applied?

Yes. You receive dividends on the stocks you hold on the ex-dividend date, paid on their payment date, less the 15% U.S. withholding tax on U.S. companies. Splits, reverse splits, mergers and spin-offs are applied to your positions and orders.

What still differs from a real broker?

Not much, and we say so: settlement in one business day (T+1) shows in your statement, but sale proceeds can be reused right away, as in a cash account; orders waiting for the open and market-on-close orders fill at the official opening or closing price, confirmed about fifteen minutes after the bell; U.S. quotes come from the IEX exchange (the spread is estimated when its book isn’t reliable), Toronto stocks are priced from New York, and your orders move the market only through an estimated size effect.

Do I need to install an app?

No. Boursicotbot runs in the browser, on desktop and mobile, and can be added to your home screen.
